A fast 24-70mm zoom is one of the most popular lenses with photographers and videographers, and for good reason. Its ability to shoot at wide, standard and short telephoto focal lengths, at a constant aperture, makes it one of the most versatile lenses you can buy. Now the much-lauded NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S II has been given a significant upgrade in every department, including the world’s first internal zoom mechanism in such a lens. Let’s dive in and look at the details.

What’s in our kitbag?

Ready for any scene
Whether it’s weddings, events, reportage, landscapes, portraits, travel, action and more, in stills or video, the new NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S II has the versatility to do it all. The focal length range can cover off a huge number of scenarios, while the constant f/2.8 aperture increases your creative options.
Internal zoom gamechanger
The internal zoom mechanism on the new NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S II is unique in its class. The design makes the lens the lightest in its class (at only 675g), there’s no shift in the centre of gravity and therefore handling is easier while the sealed barrel means more confidence in challenging situations.
The NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S II is exceptional in low light
Made for video
The existing NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S was already a well-loved video lens, and the new version takes everything up several notches. The internal zoom design means no change in the centre of gravity, so it remains balanced at all times. The constant barrel size also means it is easier to use with front mounted accessories such as matte boxes and filter inserts. The already minimal focus breathing on the old version has been reduced by half for super-smooth and natural-looking focus racking.
Superfast AF
Autofocus on the new NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S II is ahead of its predecessor on every metric. As the first NIKKOR Z zoom lens to feature the Silky Swift VCM system (SSVCM), AF speed is now 5x faster. Scan time is reduced by 40% (at the telephoto end), focus tracking while zooming is enhanced by 60% and it’s much quieter, with a perceived sound reduction of 50%.

Redesigned optics and S-Line quality
The optics on the new NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S II have been completely redesigned, with a reduced number of elements, achieving a more refined image quality while also decreasing the weight of the lens. The new design also improves bokeh via the new aspherical lens manufacturing process and an increase in the number of aperture blades from nine to 11, which increases circularity. As a NIKKOR S lens, coatings are of the highest quality, with both Meso Amorphous and ARNEO, which significantly reduce unwanted effects such as ghosting and flare. The minimum focus distance is now 24cm at the wide end and 33cm at 70mm (down from 38cm in the old version).

The NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S II’s de-clickable control ring
Better controls and handling
In a Nikon first, the NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S II features a de-clickable control ring, which gives much more flexibility. Want tactile feedback as you change parameters? Leave the ratcheted click on. Or turn it off for smooth, stepless operation, perfect for video. The lens also features two assignable L-fn buttons with easy access in vertical or horizontal positions, a focus limiter switch and a filter adjustment window on the new hood. The filter diameter of the new lens is 77mm, matching the NIKKOR Z 70-200mm f/2.8 S.
Sealed against the elements
The NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S II has the best weather sealing Nikon can offer. And because the internal zoom means fewer moving parts are exposed, it’s hugely reliable wherever you’re shooting.
